Renovation of the Bashford Courts Atrium Mall in historic downtown Prescott is expected to be completed this month. Located in the Bashford-Burmister building on Gurley Street, the popular retail center of specialty shops is undergoing an estimated $350,000 renovation.
Craig Hannay, through his Phoenix-based investment and management company, bought the historic property from businessman Richard Calabrese for $4.95 million in July 2018. Hannay, who grew up in Prescott, recalls when the building housed the JCPenney store.
During the past several months, the interior of the 33,300-square-foot, three-story building has been undergoing significant changes. Renovations include the removal of wallpaper in some areas and placement of brick veneer. Some walls are being repainted in earth tones and cabinetry is being removed to create a more open look. Wood floors are being restored, restrooms are being upgraded, sliding front doors and additional lighting are being added. Efforts have been made to retain the historic character of the landmark building.
Unique shops include spa products, Western wear, Southwestern art and gifts, a foot-spa/reflexology store and a new bakery. An import store on the second floor will feature unusual items from throughout the world. Several new tenants will be opening their shops, too. The center is anchored by the Prescott Brewing Company.
Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli applauded renovation efforts in downtown Prescott, saying he admires the vision that will transform the shopping center into an attractive, appealing and customer-friendly retail experience.
