Spring is in the air and we are all scrambling to plant our seeds so the beautiful flowers and nourishing plants can start growing. Each of these seeds represents a hope and an expectation. They start off as small, insignificant seeds, but with the right mix of sun, nutrients and water, they become beautiful life-supporting food, healing sources of medicine and endless supplies of inspiration. Our life has many similarities to a garden.
Here are some basics to prepare for a bountiful harvest:
- Gardens need good soil. Without a solid base in which to grow, plants will grow but not thrive. We are no different. We all come into this world with basic skills and talents. Success comes with what you do to enhance and embrace these. Seek out mentors to grow, be a mentor to learn and remind yourself of the thousand things you forget in a lifetime. Learn something new every day.
- Gardens need sun. So do we! Same as plants, the human body thrives on time outdoors collecting vitamin D. Hike more, play with your kids, fish, walk the dog – just get out and fill your lungs with oxygen and take in the vitamin D.
- Water and nutrients. We can’t live without good nutrition and hydration. Have you ever watched a plant shrivel and droop from dehydration or turn yellow from lack of vitamins and minerals? We all do the same thing.
Remember, just like in the garden . . . if you want to enjoy full-flavored, beautiful vegetables – you reap what you sow. So take a hike, get a massage, visit a farmer’s market, adopt a pet, feed your soul. Your future harvest depends on it.
