Yarnell Recovery Underway

September 14, 2013 By quadcities Leave a Comment

Yarnell RisingYarnell residents have announced their recovery efforts are underway.  Groundbreaking happened this weekend with a celebration at the Yarnell Hill Fire Department Saturday afternoon.

Roy and Stacy Pizzirusso  are rebuilding their site-built, single-family Glen Ilah  home following this summer’s devastating fire.

“I want it to be completely positive,” Stacy says. “Yarnell rebuilding bigger and better.”

Chuck Tidey, chair of the Yarnell Hill Recovery Group, planned to say a few words, followed by comments from Roy and Stacy. Following the ceremonial groundbreaking, local singer/songwriter, Denise Roggio’s performed the song she wrote, “Yarnell Rising.”

All of the residents of Glen Ilah, Yarnell and Peeples Valley were invited, as well as the Yavapai County officials who have been on the ground since the fire.

Michael Manone of MJ Manone, LLC, the couple’s general contractor, participated, along with many area residents.

Manone first came to Yarnell as a volunteer with the Church of Joy in Glendale. He currently has two permits in process.

The Pizzirussos will be rebuilding the home they lost, with some minor modifications.

“We had a really cool house and we’d like to have it back,” Stacy says.

Frances Lechner, spokeswoman for the Yarnell Hill Recovery Group, says: “We are so proud and so happy that in less than three months, our first groundbreaking is taking place. It will be a shot in the arm and an inspiration to the whole community.”

You can find Stacy’s full story on the “Our Stories” page of the  website, www.YarnellHillRecoveryGroup.org.

About Yarnell Hill Recovery Group

Exiled from their homes and divided by the closure of Highway 89, a group of 20 Yarnell and Peeples Valley residents conferred in person and by phone about how to rebuild their fire-ravaged community.

Out of that conversation, the all-volunteer Yarnell Hill Recovery Group was formed with a steering committee made up of five key leaders representing organizations that have long provided services to residents: the Yarnell-Peeples Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Yarnell Community Center, the Yarnell Community Presbyterian Church, the Fire Department and Weaver Mountains – People Who Care.

Under the direction of the steering committee, a dozen volunteer sub-committees have been formed to provide resources for everything from emergency housing and financial assistance to clean up and rebuilding. The group’s website, www.YarnellHillRecoveryGroup.org provides a single place for residents to get news about recovery efforts and connect with services.

The group was recently recognized by Arizona and Yavapai County as the official recovery group for the Yarnell Hill Fire.

The Yarnell Community Presbyterian Church, acting as the Yarnell Hill Recovery Group’s fiscal agent, has set up an account for the Yarnell Hill Recovery Group though the National Bank of Arizona, account #76 0000 2730, Routing #122105320.  There is a Pay Pal button for donations at www.YarnellHillRecoveryGroup.org. Checks payable to Yarnell Hill Recovery Group can be sent to Yarnell Hill Recovery Group, P.O. Box 1086, Yarnell, 85362. Donations are tax-deductible.

Granting Local Girl a Wish

September 4, 2013 By quadcities Leave a Comment

Make-A-Wish Arizona and the Prescott YMCA have come together to surprise wish kid Paula Pratt, 12, with a year membership for her and her family for the YMCA.
Paula, who was diagnosed at 18 months with a life-threatening seizure disorder, had brain surgery in 2012 but is moving forward in her care, thanks in part to her love of the water. She regularly swims with her mother and her sister as a form of therapy and enjoyment.
“We are thankful the YMCA was willing to partner with us to make Paula’s wish come true,” said Elizabeth Reich, chief executive officer of Make-A-Wish Arizona. “This is a unique wish for us but knowing that Paula will be able to use their indoor pool year-round, and bring her mother and sister with her to enjoy some time, makes us excited about this new partnership.”
“On behalf of all the dedicated volunteers who help raise money to provide scholarships to kids and families, we are very happy to partner with Make-A-Wish Arizona to help Paula’s wish come true!” said Damon Olsen, chief executive officer of the Prescott YMCA. “Each year the Prescott YMCA provides scholarships and financial aid to the Prescott and surrounding communities. In 2012 our YMCA provided over $160,000 worth of YMCA programs and services to the kids and families in need in our community”.
“With more than 400 eligible Arizona wish kids currently waiting for their one true wish, having the support of local organizations like the YMCA helps our organization grant more wishes every year,” continued Reich. “We could not continue to grow the number of wishes we grant without the help of our donors, both individual and corporate.”
This year, Make-A-Wish Arizona has granted a record 300 wishes.

ADOT Closures Continuing on I-17

August 2, 2013 By quadcities Leave a Comment

Overnight work on the Interstate 17 climbing lane project south of Camp Verde requires two, one-hour closures in both directions several nights this week between midnight and 3 a.m.

The work will occur overnight tomorrow night; Tuesday, July 30; and Wednesday, July 31 as crews continue blasting along the highway.

Each night, the first closure will be from midnight to 1 a.m. and the second closure will be 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. Northbound I-17 will be stopped at State Route 169 and southbound I-17 traffic will be stopped at General Crook Trail until the work is completed and the roadway is reopened.

In addition to the full closures, drivers can expect single-lane restrictions in both directions through the work zone between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning. During construction, bicyclists are not permitted through the project work zone as the shoulders along I-17 are closed.

The work zone will be clearly marked by temporary barricades and signage. ADOT advises drivers to allow additional time to reach their destinations and to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with the reduced speed limit, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

For more information, email projects@azdot.gov or call the ADOT project hotline at 1-855-712-8530. To stay up-to-date with the latest highway conditions around the state, visit the ADOT Traveler Information Center at www.az511.gov or call 5-1-1.
