YEI has been operating in the greater Prescott area since 1974, serving adults with disabilities and providing job training, employment and support services.
He cites the support of local contractors, sub-contractors and individuals in the construction of two new houses. “At a time when residential construction costs are setting records, we’re able to build homes and provide housing for 16 people because of hundreds of thousands of dollars of substantial financial contributions.”
A major contribution was two acres in Prescott Valley donated by the Sterling family. The YEI homes, called Sterling Ranches, were designed by Michael Taylor Architects, who supported the project along with Kelley-Wise Engineering, Lyon Engineering, Fann Contracting, MI Windows and Doors, European Technology Cabinets, Totally Floored, B’s Contractors and Legacy Roofing.
B’s Contractors Superintendent Bill Pierce drew special praise from Newman. “He is an icon in the local construction industry. His special efforts brought these houses in well under budget, despite the ever-increasing construction costs, especially for materials. What’s more, he did it ahead of schedule.” The project began Dec. 3, 2020.
Newman said each house has 4,884 square feet of livable space. One home is for men, the other for women. They include nine bedrooms, five bathrooms and a shared kitchen and living space for occupants. Resident hosts will have one of the bedrooms in each house.
“What’s happened is that our YEI-hoos who work at the YRI Antelope Point production facility can now walk to work from their new homes,” Newman said. “The YEI-hoos also will have a stunning view of Lynx Creek Canyon, and in the distance, the Rafter 11 Ranch and its windmill. They’ll also have ‘Wazo Park,’ a barbeque island, with horseshoe and cornhole pits and shared seating area, all in memory of the late Jeff Wasowicz, because of gifts made in his name.”
