Leslie Horton, an 18-year Yavapai County employee, was selected as the “Outstanding Achievement in Rural Women’s Health” recipient by the Arizona Rural Women’s Health Initiative.
In a written statement, the statewide organization said, “Leslie was selected based on her leadership and cooperative attitude in seeking ways to make lasting contributions to public health issues. She has the ability to envision and create successful outcomes in complex situations.”
Horton modestly accepted the recognition. In comments to the Quad Cities Business News, she said that she cannot take sole credit for the award. “I could never accomplish what I set out to do without my amazing team at health services. I work with incredible individuals who are devoted to improving public health and to creating positive outcomes across the county.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has shown me how public health can truly guide and impact a community during difficult times. I’ve watched my team transform so it can suit the needs of our many communities during difficult times. I’m so proud of the work we have been able to accomplish. We’ll continue to do so in the days, weeks and years to come,” she said.
In her role as director, Horton administers a public health department with a budget of approximately $6.7 million. It has 85 employees. That includes physicians, nurses, environmental health specialists, health education, dietitians, and office and operational staff. Her department serves the entirety of Yavapai County, which has a growing population estimated at 240,000.
The Alaska native moved to Arizona in 1998 and attended Northern Arizona University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 2006 and a Master’s Degree in public health in 2006.
Horton, 40, is active with several community, county and statewide organizations that serve the greater public. QCBN
