Drivers in Prescott Valley will see some new cameras at intersections this month, but it has nothing to do with speed radar. The cameras are part of a town wide signal study aimed at improving pedestrian safety and the flow of traffic.
Prescott Valley Public Works Operations Manager Ken Stanton said new Federal standards require that more time be allowed for pedestrians to cross intersections. Additionally, the Town has not adjusted its traffic signals in 10 years.
“We’ve had a lot of changes with roadways and developments such as Tim’s Toyota Center, Walmart and Kohl’s,” Stanton said.
Cameras will record traffic movements, volume, turns and pedestrian traffic at each intersection within Town limits. A few intersections have conditions that don’t allow for cameras, so those will be counted manually.
Lee Engineering, a firm that specializes in traffic operations, will analyze the data and optimize the signal timing throughout Prescott Valley. A Lee engineer will then work with Town staff to change signals to the new timing.
The counts are expected to continue through mid-February, with the entire project completed by mid-April.
