In today’s fast-paced world, we are into fast everything. We want to get a fast bite to eat. We want to order something on our computers that gets delivered to our home two days later. We want the ease of what is most precious to us, and that is our time. But let’s consider for just a minute what brought you to the Quad Cities area. I don’t think it was just the climate. It may have been the local schools, the unique stores and shops. It may have been the great mom and pop places to eat. It could have been the friendly people or our local hometown feel and community involvement. There are so many things that make up a community, but I think that without people, we would not have a community at all.
With that being said, people have to live and survive. It takes a town government, a police force, fire protection, schools and hospitals – and I’m sure I’m only scratching the surface. The point is that if we don’t support these local businesses, they go away. When local businesses go away, local support that those businesses provide to all those schools, police and fire departments, local government and tax base go with them.
It’s a well-known fact that when you spend $100 locally, $73 stays in the community. Locally owned businesses have better customer service. They stock merchandise that is specific to our area and our needs. If you have a problem with the goods or services, you can actually talk to someone and get the problem solved.
I made the mistake of ordering a pair of shoes that looked good in a Facebook ad. I didn’t realize that they were coming from China. After two months, I tried to call and find out where my purchase was, and when I might get them. The company did not take phone calls and an email response took two weeks. Never again will I make that mistake.
Here at Findlay Subaru Prescott, we take pride in supporting our local businesses. We support local charities that our community needs. I was talking to Toni Jarnagin of Source One Supply in Prescott the other day about Amazon. I pointed out that Amazon doesn’t support our schools, 4H/FFA, Symphony, sports and Boy Scouts (just to mention a few). I also pointed out that I have never received a hug from Amazon thanking me for my business.
I know it takes a little more time to spend locally, but I think that the benefits of a better community that we all live in and love is well worth it. Invest in your local business and strengthen the community in which you live. QCBN
