As the days have grown shorter and we experience the effects of less sunlight, we are reminded how important the right light is for our overall well-being.
Lighting intervention, known as circadian lighting, has been used to minimize the effects of jet lag. Here at The Landings of Prescott Valley, we are using circadian lighting to improve the lives of our residents in our Secured Assisted Living.
The importance of regulating sleep patterns in residents with dementia through lighting intervention is well documented. Minimizing the effects of sundowner’s syndrome, for example, helps reduce anxiety and depression. Behaviors and socialization are improved as the resident becomes more active and engaged.
What is circadian lighting then, in the setting of our Secured Assisted Living? Circadian lighting is lighting that slowly changes to mimic the transition from sunrise, to daytime and then to late afternoon. The morning sunrise light encourages residents to get up. As the light becomes brighter like the sun outside, the residents become more alert and ready for the day. In the late afternoon, the light begins a slow shift to softer hues, allowing the residents to become quieter as they prepare for the evening and more restful sleep.
The Landings of Prescott Valley is the only Assisted Living offering circadian lighting in a secured setting. This lighting is used in all the common areas of the Secured Assisted Living, including the dining room. The lighting in each resident room can also be controlled individually from the established lighting schedule. For instance, residents on hospice service may benefit from the softer hues of the late afternoon schedule.
Safety continues to be a priority for anyone visiting, so please call in advance to schedule a tour and see a demonstration of our circadian lighting.
