The first annual Memorial 5K Fun Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, June 7.
The race will begin and end at the Assembly of God Church, and wind through Glen Ilah and a portion of Yarnell. Proceeds will benefit Yarnell Fire District and Wildland Firefighter Foundation.
Registration will take place at 7 a.m. The 5K race will begin at 8 a.m. and the walk will begin at 8:15 a.m. Prizes for first, second and third place in the 5K run will be offered, as well as raffle prizes.
Raffle tickets are available the day of the event for $5 each. Those not attending can purchase tickets at www.yarnellfire.com. The drawing will be held immediately after the awards ceremony. Prizes include a Granite Mountain Hotshots memorial quilt from the William Warneke Memorial Foundation and a Diamondbacks package, including tickets, among other items.
The Fun Run/Walk is 1 mile and has a firefighter theme. Participants are encouraged to participate in firefighter-related attire. All 5K runners will receive a T-shirt with their $40 registration. Other registrants can add the T-shirt for an additional $15.
Race organizer Aileen Casillas, who serves on the YFD, came up with the idea after volunteering at last year’s Groom Creek Fire District race.
“I saw how the community and the Groom Creek Fire District came together to make this happen,” Casillas says. “Seeing that inspired me to bring a similar event to Yarnell to honor the community and the fallen 19. I hope to unite the community and the Yarnell Fire District for a family friendly event that will bring something positive to the community during this difficult, emotional time.”
Sponsors include The Ranch House restaurant, The William Warneke Memorial Foundation and Silver Raven Designs. More sponsors, volunteers and donations are needed.
