An industry website has ranked the Yavapai College administration of justice programs fifth in the site’s first annual Top Correctional Officer School rankings for Arizona.
CorrectionalOfficer.org analyzed the relevant programs of 18 Arizona colleges and ranked the top five. The rankings, which reflect each college’s success in producing program completers, are based on student data, published surveys and other school and career data collected from several sources, including such government agencies as the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Schools were sorted in order of the highest percentage of total students graduating with a degree in the field of criminal justice. The rankings can be found at www.correctionalofficer.org/state/arizona.
YC programs included in the evaluation are Associate of Applied Science in Administration of Justice degree, Certificate in Law Enforcement and Corrections, Certificate in Justice Studies and Certificate in Criminal Justice and Security, as well as the college’s Detention Academy operated in cooperation with the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. The college graduated 49 students in these programs during the 2012-13 school year, the period covered by the CorrectionalOfficer.org analysis.
“With the heavy focus on having program completers, this is a marvelous stat,” noted YC Professor and Program Director of Administration of Justice and Paralegal Studies Michael Davis, Ph.D. “This stat alone shows how much more effective we are at that goal than many of our larger competitors.”
The CorrectionalOfficer.org website notes that the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth in these fields to be “steady at five percent over the next decade.”
“Ample employment opportunities abound as states outsource more prison facilities to third-party companies and move to fill internal gaps left by retiring or promoted officers. The need for correctional workers in community services capacities is also expected to grow,” the website states. QCBN
