Yavapai Humane Society finds training and family for German shepherd.

Browning was a large female German shepherd mix who came to Yavapai Humane Society in May 2023 through Prescott Animal Control as a stray. She was initially defensive and growled at anyone who walked near her kennel in an attempt to scare them away. It seemed as though Browning wanted nothing to do with anyone, but in reality, she was only afraid.

Several staff members had mentioned Browning’s attitude problem and had concerns about her defensive behavior. The YHS Canine Behavior Team conducted a behavior assessment on Browning and came to the conclusion that she was only displaying those behaviors as a sign of initial fear and just needed time to get to know new people and acclimate to her environment. Once allowed to properly meet her new handlers and given time to adjust to her new surroundings, YHS representatives say she instantly became playful and absolutely enjoyed receiving attention. She was then made available for adoption after her medical exam.

After some time of being on the adoption floor, several kennel techs had an issue with Browning. Browning would become overly excited to go out for walks and pulled heavily on her leash throughout the walk. She also enjoyed jumping on her handlers in hopes of receiving attention. The Behavior Team then placed Browning in basic obedience classes to teach her leash manners and a couple of tricks. They say the training went extraordinarily well, and she seemed to enjoy the extra attention and play throughout training. She successfully completed her basic obedience training and was ready to be adopted.

Browning was adopted to her new family in September 2023. Her new adopters later reached out to YHS to say that Browning is now enjoying chasing lizards, chewing on sticks and playing tug of war. “She has settled in and made herself right at home with us,” reported her new family. “We love her and she loves us. She has responded well to training and commands and is learning new things. We couldn’t be more pleased if she had been custom ordered for us.”

Browning is one of the many dogs that YHS has helped rehome into loving homes throughout the years. With the help of caring staff members, volunteers, donors and adopters, we have been able to find homes for pets who have nowhere else to go.
