Yavapai College alumnus Ernie Jones, Sr., president of the Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe, and 24 exceptional Yavapai College students were honored at the college’s annual recognition event April 8 at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center.
Jones was named Yavapai College’s Outstanding Alumnus from the Prescott Campus. Steve Walker, YC vice president of advancement and executive director of the Yavapai College Foundation, introduced Jones and presented him with his award.
“Under Mr. Jones’s leadership, the Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe has been a great supporter of not only athletics, but also student clubs, the Family Enrichment Center, the Performing Arts Center and the Sculpture Garden,” noted Walker. “It is important for everyone here tonight to know a very significant historical fact: Yavapai College exists here on this site in Prescott due to the incredible generosity and leadership provided by YPIT back in the 1960s when this college was being founded. Both Ernie and his wife Janet served for many years on the Roughrider Club board, and, with funding support from YPIT, Ernie and Janet established the first-ever YCF athletics scholarship fund. Thank you and the Yavapai-Prescott Indian Tribe for all you have done to strengthen and grow the educational programs at Yavapai College.”
The college also recognized 24 students from the Prescott campus for outstanding achievements in individual academic programs, national competitions and campus activities.
Megan Daubert, a biology major, and Taylor Haynes, a comparative cultural studies major, were honored in three categories each. Daubert was recognized as the outstanding science student, as a 2014 Coca-Cola Gold Scholar and as a member of the All-USA Academic Team. Haynes, also a member of the All-USA Academic Team, was recognized as the outstanding English student and as a 2014 Coca-Cola Silver Scholar.
Jasmine Demaline, a 2012 YC nursing graduate, was recognized as a recipient of a 2014 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which will provide her with up to $30,000 a year to pursue her bachelor’s degree at the university of her choice. Only 85 such scholarships were awarded out of some 25,000 applicants this year.
The complete list of Tuesday night’s honorees is below.
Similar recognition events are scheduled for later this month at the college’s Verde Valley Campus to honor Verde Valley and Sedona Center students and at the Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) in Prescott.
