“You would never imagine the ideas and the passion behind the ideas.”
The Yavapai College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be working with entrepreneurs and supporting pitch events in Wickenburg (Feb. 23), Seligman (Feb. 27), the Quad Cities (March 28) and the Verde Valley (May 17).
“Whether you’re an entrepreneur with a moonshot start-up idea or a seasoned founder with a business you’d like to expand, participation in this event hones your business skills and assists in moving your business forward,” said Moonshot President and CEO Scott Hathcock.
In addition to competing to win cash prizes and Moonshot scholarships, local entrants will also receive startup and pitch education, coaching and pitch practice opportunities from the team of certified business analysts at the Yavapai College SBDC. No-cost confidential coaching and mentorship is offered for each event and afterward.
SBDC Certified Business Analyst Marie Platowski-Beals has coached hundreds of Yavapai business owners, including O’Connor when she won in 2022. “This is a great opportunity for any business owner to get started or to expand their business into new markets,” she said. “Our team is there for each participant during the tour and long after it is over.”
“The competition continues to empower business owners and provides opportunities to learn new skills,” said Hathcock. Our formula has been to find the talent, see who is doing what, see what they are passionate about, see that they are passionate about where they live and try to support them with those things they need to really grow, create jobs and succeed.”
Participants prepare, practice and perfect a five-minute pitch presentation for a panel of judges that selects the finalists. Winners at each local event will go on to compete in the statewide competition in Cottonwood in August for a $10,000 cash prize.
Moonshot Chief Marketing Officer Kiersten Hathcock pitched her garage-based Mod Mom Furniture business on Shark Tank and had great success. Today, she supports entrepreneurs through their pitches.
“It does take a lot of courage,” she said. “One of the things I talk about is that judges want to know that you know your target market and that you know what the competition is. A lot of people have great ideas but it’s going that step further and showing us that you know what you’re talking about.
“We’ve had a lot of people show up at our events who have just amazing ideas, and they are all in it for job growth,” said Scott. “We have some entrepreneurs who are rocket scientists, and we have some who think they know how to build a better taco. It really does run the gamut. We don’t have a particular sector we’re focusing on, mainly we’re just trying to help those who are experts in that thing, surround them with business acumen, get them to market sooner and get them on a faster track to hiring more people.”
“The stories that come out of rural Arizona, about why entrepreneurs and innovators do what they do, are so inspirational,” said Kiersten. “You would never imagine the ideas and the passion behind the ideas. We are in tears every time we go to a pitch event.”
Scott says Moonshot believes that no matter where you live, you should have access to the same entrepreneurial resources as those who live in major cities. Thus, Moonshot’s mission is to help bring products and services to market and to help cities in rural Arizona develop “entrepreneurial ecosystems” that create jobs.
Local cash prize packages for the top three winners in each community are made possible through area sponsors, including Arizona Capitol Source, National Bank of Arizona, and OneAz Credit Union, as well as several local businesses and community partners.
Title sponsors are Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Arizona Commerce Authority, and APS. QCBN
