Contributions from individual donors, businesses and corporations, combined with concert income, is making it possible for the Prescott Pops Symphony Orchestra to give $16,000 in grants to eight schools to support instrumental music programs.
Those receiving $2,000 grants are BASIS High School, Mile High Mid-School and Granite Mountain Mid School in Prescott; Chino Valley High School/Heritage Mid-School in Chino Valley; and Glassford Hill Mid-School, Liberty Traditional, Bradshaw Mountain High School and Franklin Phonetic School – all in Prescott Valley.
Use of funds will range from purchase and repair of instruments and equipment to acquisition of music.
“We’re grateful to all who contribute to help support school music programs, for such support is critical in these tight school budget times,” said POPS board chair Anne Babinsky.
The organization is now in its 26th year. Founded by former Prescott resident and middle school music teacher Paul Manz in 1992, the Pops Symphony strives to the promote instrumental music through grants.
Musicians in the orchestra are all local community members. Directed by Joe Place, the Pops usually perform in concert five times a year.
