In the blink of an eye, in the flash of a single moment, we are here, on this planet, and then we are gone. Life can be looked at as if we are waiting for a train. We are waiting and waiting and waiting. The train comes. And then it is gone. And for that moment in time, that blink of an eye, anything is possible. In that fleeting bit of time, we can treasure and honor and revel in the sensational experience of being human or not.
I heard once, “To be well is to live well.” To treat these bodies with the utmost care and attention upholds the experience of pure enjoyment. With the ever-changing tides of life and the limitless uncertainties of what is to come of us and this planet, it becomes imminent that we tend to the needs of ourselves, so that we may go out and care and tend to the needs of others and to the needs of our world.
Living life to the fullest doesn’t mean we all need to experience skydiving or deep sea spelunking, it means that we cultivate awareness and wellness, fully, so that if we ever so choose to embark on any adventure, big or small, our bodies are capable.
The human body is remarkable in its ability to sense the world. With our vision, we can see extraordinary beauty. With our hearing, we can listen to the magnificence of music. With our touch, we can feel deeply. With our olfactory sense, we can smell the sweetness and richness of nature and food and each other.
To live well is to take responsibility for the wellness of our lives. We are given these bodies through which to sense the world but a brief moment. It is a gift to experience the world through the human form. And so what do we owe ourselves for this one amazing chance at experiencing? I say, we owe it, not just to ourselves, but to each other, to make the most out of life. To delight in the ordinary moments is to perceive the mundane as extraordinary. How can you begin? Well, it begins inside.
Relish the nourishing feeling of drinking a cool glass of water. Enjoy the pure sweetness of a juicy piece of fruit. Take the time to collect your pennies and stop and smell the bark on a ponderosa pine tree. Touch your own skin and give yourself a hug once in a while. Write a poem to describe a beautiful day. Make art. Dance. Jump in a cold body of water. Find yourself in nature. Spend time in silence. You are on a quest to enjoy life. Take the time to ask yourself, “What makes me feel good?” Now, go out and do it! There is little time to waste.
What makes YOU come alive? As Linda Ellis may ask, how are you going to spend your time between the dash of your moment of birth to the moment you leave this magnificent, extraordinary life? QCBN
